The Irish Dairy Board (IDB), a cooperative enterprise of farmers, has announced plans to build a cheese manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia, which would serve as its hub in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region

According to the Irish Independent, IDB chief executive officer Kevin Lane revealed the society?s plans during a recent Irish trade mission?s visit to the Kingdom.

Lane said, ?The plant would produce a range of fresh white cheeses with technology developed by the IDB and Irish farming promotion agency Teagasc. Fresh white cheese is popular in the Middle East.?

Saudi Arabia imports more than 400,000 tonnes of dairy produce per year, the news paper reported.

The IDB is also expected to invest up to US$27.5mn in the region, according to company sources.
