ABB wins US$20 million switchgear order

ABB has won an order worth more than US$20mn from Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works Company Limited (SSEM)

ABB will supply 420kV of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) equipment for the new Al Lith substation in Saudi Arabia. The substation, which is being built by SSEM for Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), is scheduled for completion in September 2014.

Giandomenico Rivetti, head of ABB?s high voltage products division, said, "The new substation where this GIS equipment is being installed will enhance power capacity and help meet growing electricity demand to support growing consumer demand and industrial development in the country."

Saudi Arabia accounts for around half of the total electricity consumption in the GCC region. Economic growth, led mainly by the oil and gas sector, is driving the development of power infrastructure and electricity supplies throughout the country.

The order follows ABB's announcement in early 2012 that it would invest US$40mn in the construction of a new manufacturing plant for high-voltage GIS along with a transformer service workshop in Saudi Arabia.
