Oman?s RAECO to set up pilot solar and wind projects

Omans Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) has said it is in advanced talks with private developers to build pilot solar and wind power projects in Mazyona and Masirah

Hamed bin Salim Al Magdheri, CEO of RAECO, said, ?The 350kW-capacity solar project in Mazyona will be developed as an independent power project by a private investor.

?We are going to launch the project to see the efficiency of solar technology and how suitable is the technology for Oman climate. We are now finalising documentation work. We have also acquired land and completed the design.?

RAECO, which produces 700MW of power from 48 power plants for 26,000 customers in the region, would buy power from the independent power project, estimated to cost around US$3.1mn.

Referring to the proposed wind project, Al Magdheri said it would be built in Masirah with the capacity to generate 750kW of power.

?We have already selected the location and are negotiating with a private investor,? he said of the wind project.
