Spanish firm wins desalination deal in Saudi Arabia

Spanish engineering group Accionas water division, Acciona Agua, has been awarded a two-year US$18.6mn deal to operate and maintain a pair of wastewater treatment plants in Saudi Arabias Makkah Province

The Haddah-1 and Arena-1 plants were built by Saudi Arabian construction firms Azziz and Bin Jarallah respectively in 2011. Together, they have a capacity of 375,000 cubic metres per day.

Acciona Agua specialises in developing reverse osmosis seawater desalination plants and the deal represents the firm's second major contract win in the country in recent months.

The company was awarded a design-build-commission contract for a 100,000 cubic metre-capacity seawater desalination plant, which is being built in conjunction with Saudi BinLadin Group.
