Dubai-based construction company Arabtec has won an US$123mn contract from OAO Gazprom to build Europe?s tallest office tower in the Russian city of St Petersburg

The package is the first to be awarded for the distinctively-shaped, twisting tower where the new headquarters of Russian natural gas exporter and oil companies, Gazprom and Gazpromneft, will be located.

Arabtec managing director Hasan Abdulla said, "Arabtec was involved in preparing the design and documentation for the tower package until the client settled on the new site at the Gulf of Finland."

The second phase of the project will involve the construction of two new podium buildings, a concourse, undergound car parks and support facilities surrounding the tower.

"We are pleased to announce this award and we expect more projects to be awarded in the promising Russia market," said Abdulla. "Russia has been set as a target market in the overall expansion policy of Arabtec worldwide and it seems our persistent efforts have started to pay dividend."
