Dubai approves US$1.6 billion island project

Dubai has given the go-ahead to plans for a new US$1.6bn island project featuring the worlds largest ferris wheel at its centre

The Emirate is already home to property landmarks such as manmade islands in the shape of palms and the world's tallest tower.

Dubai's ruler has approved the Bluewaters Island development, which is to include a 210-metre high ferris wheel called the Dubai Eye. The wheel is reported to be inspired by the 135-metre high London Eye on the River Thames.

State-owned Meraas Holding will develop the Bluewaters project, which will begin construction in April 2013.

South Korea's Hyundai Contracting and Starneth Engineering, which helped build the London Eye, have been appointed primary contractors for the design and construction of Dubai Eye.
