Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)'s Research and Development Centre organised a virtual seminar titled 'Easy, Accurate, and Fast Complex Analytics on Big Data Chains for Power Utility Companies' to introduce techniques for indexing and analysing big data chains, subsequent anomaly detection and explanations, for a faster and more accurate approach
“We work in line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice- president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, to make the UAE an efficient and influential part of the international academic and research community. We are committed to anticipating and shaping the future of energy and water. We aim to make DEWA’s R&D Centre, at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, a globally recognised platform for demonstrating emerging clean energy and water technologies. The centre’s areas of work include solar power; the integration of smart grids; energy efficiency, and water, in addition to fourth industrial revolution applications such as ‘3-D Printing and Additive Manufacturing’ as one of the innovative solutions to produce spare parts for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution divisions,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.
“All of DEWA’s operations are completely automated using the latest systems and international practices. At DEWA, we make use of the big data generated by smart meters and grids to further enhance the availability, efficiency and reliability of our services. This data, in turn, is used to enhance operational efficiency in our generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and water, so we can serve our customers better, and drive Research and Development (R&D) by identifying opportunities for future improvements within our sector,” added Al Tayer.
Dr Saif Saeed Almheiri, vice- president, Research and Development at DEWA, commented, “This seminar comes as part of Al Baheth programme, which is designed to disseminate knowledge and develop local research and give them an edge in the job market in cooperation with major academics and local and international sector leaders.”
During the seminar, Themis Palpanas, professor of Computer Science at the Paris Descartes University, underlined the importance of developing technologies capable of managing and analysing large data sets for power utility companies, increasing reliance on machine learning, and harnessing their power to develop the work of power utility companies; especially in the field of solar PV panels and clean energy in general.
