Bahrain to spend US$2bn on international airport expansion

Bahrain has allocated US$2bn for an upgrade and expansion of the airport?s facilities, and aims to increase passenger capacity to 13.5mn.

Bahrain has decided to invest US$2bn to upgrade and expand the Bahrain International Airport (BIA) over the next five years

Officials from the airport stated that the work would involve a ?comprehensive redevelopment? of the airport?s capacity to improve its passenger and cargo capacity. With the upgrade, the airport could contain 13.5mn passengers annually.

The airport authorities are also participating in a show in April 2015, along with the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) to showcase the nation?s regional connectivity by air, and its presence as a logistics hub in the GCC.

Mohamed Yousif al Binfalah, CEO of Bahrain Airport Company, said, ?In line with the BAC?s ongoing efforts to elevate the country?s aviation and logistics capabilities, we are pleased to confirm our support to the Bahrain International Airport development forum in conjunction with the Middle East cargo and logistics exposition. We believe the event would support the growth of transport infrastructure in the country.?

The Bahrain International Airport is located in the northern Gulf, and is considered one of the key aviation hubs in the Middle East. In September 2014, US$1bn was provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development for an upgrade at the airport.
