American University in Dubai (AUD) has teamed up with the global security provider Dormakaba, aiming to provide opportunity to the students to design lever handles for Expo 2020 mobility pavilion
The idea came from AUD student Tania Mary George, who collaborated with Simon Beckers of Dormakaba to create designs for the Expo 2020 opportunity and sustainability pavilions.
The similar kind of design philosophy of the pavilion is seen to be translated to the lever handles.
To continue this collaboration, a competition was arranged at AUD campus on 29 May 2017, to create design proposals of lever handles for Expo 2020 mobility pavilion. The interior design class of the AUD participated in the competition.
Following this was a series of interactions between Dormakaba and the students, under the guidance of Chadi Al Tabbah, associated professor of interior design.
El Tabbah said that the design proposals of the students included sensitivity of human factor in design and integration of ergonomics and technical, with an aim to achieve ?product to serve human behaviour.?
Dormakaba supported the students by printing the 3D samples of the proposals to make the presentations realistic with touch and feel.
Salwa Hassan won the first prize for the design of lever handles, which emphasises on organic form conveying the feel of a secure hand.
The second prize was won by Lena Kinj and the third prize was won by Nour al Jaroudi.
George Philip, vice president at Dormakaba marketing Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented, ? We are delighted to invite young minds to share with us some futuristic designs that we could propose for the upcoming Mobility Pavilion for Dubai Expo 2020. We would like to compliment the vision of Expo 2020 Dubai by bringing in world class standards and inviting the youth to partner with us.?
AUD said that they are looking forward to presenting these design proposals to Expo 2020 Dubai.
