Fluor?s phosphate project in Saudi Arabia begins production

Fluor Corporation announced that it is providing programme management services for Ma?aden Waad Al-Shamal Phosphate Company?s (MWSPC) Umm Wual phosphate project in Saudi Arabia for the production of ammonia, merchant-grade acid and fertiliser

MWSPC is a joint venture between Ma?aden, the Mosaic Company and Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).

According to the Fluor, it will also provide engineering, procurement and operations and readiness services for various scopes of the US$8bn megaproject.

Ma?aden has started production on diammonium phosphate fertiliser, merchant-grade acid and ammonia. With phosphate being a key element in fertiliser for agricultural crops, the facility in Saudi Arabia is expected to meet global food supply needs by delivering three million metric tonnes per annum of diammonium phosphate and nitrogen, phosphorous and potash fertilisers.

Speaking about the project, Tony Morgan, president of mining and metals business at Fluor, said, ?As part of Saudi Arabia?s Vision 2030, this world-class project will have a long-lasting impact on the region, as it diversifies the country?s economy and creates local job opportunities for citizens.

?We look forward to continuing our partnership with Ma?aden in developing their next phase of mining projects in Saudi Arabia through our recently signed memorandum of understanding,? Morgan added.

Fluor has implemented safety programme including its Life Critical Programme, aiming to help the project achieve more than 46mn consecutive work hours without a lost-time incident. The company has a peak site workforce of 28,000 from more than 50 nationalities.
