The Ministry of Electricity of Iraq has outlined 11 new schemes to expand the electricity network in the Babel province in 2013

According to Iraqi news agency, All Iraq News, the ministry has reportedly planned to start five projects that will ?extend the sources to feed the minor electricity stations in Babel?.

A ministry spokesperson has said that the power projects would also include the extension of six power lines from these stations.

The spokesperson added that the scheme will help in ?reducing the electricity crisis, help meet the needs of people and develop the performance of the electricity network in Babel province?.

The ministry source further noted that electricity supplies throughout Iraq have been characterised by sporadic power cuts, particularly during summer demand peaks.

Investment in the country?s infrastructure has focused on boosting production capacity but the requirements lagged around four gigawatts behind last year during peak demand.
