The global solar EPC company Sterling and Wilson has selected NEXTracker to supply 325MW of its single-axis solar trackers to the Benban solar park project in Aswan, Egypt
After completion in 2019, the 37 sq km-Benban solar park is expected to host a total capacity of more than 1.6 GW, making it one of the largest planned solar installations in the world.
Egypt is increasingly turning to solar power to meet the domestic electricity demand. According to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports, Egypt plans to generate 20 per cent of its electricity from the renewable energy sources by 2022.
To support the country?s initiative to shift to renewable energy, the International Finance Corp (IFC) and a consortium of other lenders pledged US$653mn to support Benban solar park project. The financing is set to help 13 private companies build and operate power plants at the site.
Under the partnership programme, NEXTracker will supply its NX Horizon single-axis tracker to the project which will have five blocks of 65MW each.
NEXTracker advances the power plant with solar tracker and energy storage innovations, aiming to increase performance and reduce costs for solar power plants. The company has deployed more than 400MW of trackers for their projects in India, with further aiming to extend that partnership to North Africa as well.
