Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has announced to increase its SWRO production capacity to 305 MIGD by 2030, with the desalinated water production capacity reaching 750 MIGD in 2030
The SWRO project, with a production capacity of 40 MIGD and investments worth US$244million, is scheduled for operation in Q1 of 2021. The project will receive financial support from assets owned by DEWA and its subsidiaries, which exceeds US$49.5bn, and investments worth US$23.4bn in the energy and water sectors, for over five years.
DEWA's 43 Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) water desalination units, has a total production capacity of 445 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of water at the D, E, G, K, L, and M-Stations. It also has a Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plant located at Jebel Ali Power Plant and Desalination Complex, with a production capacity of 25 MIGD, which produces 470 MIGD of desalinated water.
DEWA has achieved a new world-breaking record for the lowest water levelised tariff of US$0.277 per cu/m for its 120 MIGD Hassyan SWRO Plant, which is DEWA?s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) model project. DEWA is scheduled to commission the project in 2024.
By 2030, 100% of desalinated water will be produced by using a mix of clean energy, comprising solar power and waste heat.
DEWA is also building a subterranean water basin to store 6,000mn gallons of desalinated water that will provide the Emirate with a strategic reserve of more than 50 million gallons of water per day in emergencies. It ensures the quality of the desalinated water meets the highest international standards, including that of the World Health Organisation.
