Doha Port will undergo a US$549mn redevelopment in Q2 2017 and will close for navigation next March to make way for the works, according to reports

The redevelopment work will include extensive dredging in the area surrounding the port to ensure the smooth arrival of large vessels, particularly cruise ships, Qatar?s minister of transport and communications Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti said.

As part of the development plans for the port, both maintenance of the facilities and canal deepening work will be carried out.

The infrastructure development is to be carried out in two phases starting from April next year. While the work is under way, most of the traffic to Doha Port will be diverted to the new, larger Hamad Port, which lies south of Doha.

The announcement was made by Al Sulaiti at the Qatar Transport Safety Forum 2016. He also told local media that Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has already unveiled plans to turn Doha Port into a cruise terminal and tourist attraction.
