Honeywell Systems to be used in Abu Dhabi Fertiliser Plant

Honeywell announced that it has been selected by Samsung Engineering Co., Ltd. to deliver an integrated process control system for FERTIL-2, a new fertiliser plant being built near Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Honeywell's Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) and Safety Manager will be used to fully automate the facility and increase output for ammonia and urea used in fertiliser production by up to 50 per cent. Samsung Engineering is engaged by Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to develop the new fertiliser plant.

Honeywell's Experion PKS will help FERTIL-2 to produce ammonia and urea in capacities of up to 2,000 and 3,500 metric tonnes per day respectively, with production slated to begin in January 2013. In addition, with the implementation of Safety Manager, Experion will improve FERTIL-2's process-safeguarding protocols such as emergency shutdowns, fire and gas monitoring, and critical application control. FERTIL's existing plant also uses Honeywell technology.

"One of our primary aims is minimizing the loss of productivity associated with a plant shutdown," said a spokesperson from Samsung Engineering. "We chose Honeywell because their offerings can minimise productivity losses resulting from shutdown periods. Their experience with the existing FERTIL-1 plant also proved to be an added advantage."

"As the fertiliser industry slowly recovers from the recent economic slump, manufacturers like FERTIL are seeing the need for more efficient and cost-effective production," said Lee Dong Yeol, Asia Pacific EPC Sales Leader, Honeywell Korea. "With the implementation of Experion PKS and Safety Manager, FERTIL should benefit from reduced maintenance costs, improved productivity and increased fertiliser production volumes, which can help boost the region's food production capacity."
