GE has presented GE Reservoir, an energy storage platform, at the Smart Grid and Energy Storage conference in Dubai

The company has presented the platform at the conference organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in collaboration with EDF on 21-22 March 2018.

The reservoir has a 20MW, 80MWh pre-launch commitment and makes use of the company?s cloud platform Predix.

?GE?s Reservoir platform enables cost-effective distribution, storage, and utilisation of cleaner, more reliable power where and when it is needed most. It can fit into most any setting, from centralised grid systems to the most remote villages and communities,? Eric Gebhardt, vice-president and strategic technology officer of GE Power, said.

The industrial giant said the platform would be a fit for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets, where customers are looking increase power generation through renewable energy sources.

GE cut about 12,000 jobs last year at its global power business in an effort to reduce its exposure to fossil fuel power plants and grow market share in the renewable energy market.

Countries like the UAE, Kuwait and Egypt have set renewable energy goals to cut their dependence on oil and offset the impact of the slump in oil prices.

?The energy landscape is undergoing an unprecedented paradigm shift, as the growth of renewables, decentralization of power and digitization create both new challenges and opportunities in how power is generated, transmitted and distributed. GE?s Reservoir delivers the new type of energy system that customers are looking for to help manage electricity?s next chapter,? said Russell Stokes, president and CEO of GE Power.
