Abu Dhabis municipality has launched a new irrigation master plan with a view to reducing the amount of fresh water used to irrigate plants and green areas as the city develops
It would introduce a 'total reliance on treated waste water' for irrigating plants as opposed to using desalinated water or spring water that can be spared for drinking and other uses.
Rashid Al Falasi, director of parks and recreational facilities for Abu Dhabi City, said, "This project is undertaken in the context of the municipality's keenness to conserve the irrigation water, and adopt state-of-the-art technologies in constructing advanced irrigation networks.
"It also sets the provision of green spaces, parks and recreational facilities as a priority for the Municipality Abu Dhabi City in order to meet the requirements of the steady growth witnessed by Abu Dhabi along with the accompanying developments spanning green spaces, and public parks," he added.
The masterplan would be implemented over a period of 18 months and will focus on forecasting the municipality's future needs for irrigation for existing and planned parks across the city.
It would also look at alternative irrigation methods such as using hydraulic modeling programs for pumping water around its network.
