Construction company Belhasa Six Construct has been awarded a US$218mn contract by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to construct Phase 3 of the Dubai Water Canal project
According to the contract, Belhasa Six Construct would be constructing the Dubai canal, footbridges, and marine transit stations. The construction will begin in June 2014.
Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of the RTA, said, ?Phase 3 of the project comprises the construction of a water canal linking the Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf extending from the Shaikh Zayed Road, passing Al Safa Park and Jumeirah 2, and terminating at the Arabian Gulf near the southern end of the Jumeirah Beach Park.?
Phase 1 of the US$544mn project began in September 2013, and is expected to be completed by September 2016, stated authorities.
Phase 3 would cover the drilling of the water canal, constructing the sides of the canal, building three footbridges linking the two canal banks and constructing four marine transit stations. These stations would connect the newly-constructed World Islands and Jumeirah 2 Islands in the Gulf.
Al Tayer added, ?The marine transit modes are expected to attract more than six million riders per annum, according to the strategic marine transport plan in Dubai. The canal will also boost the profile of Dubai as a leading destination of sea cruises.?
Belhasa Six Construct would also make an artificial peninsula across the Jumeirah Park, which will double the length of the park beach, increase park area and provide room for recreational activities.
