US to provide US$20 million fund for Jordan water system

The USA is set to provide Jordan with a US$20mn grant to help communities in the country?s northern region alleviate water scarcity issues

The region has seen its water supplies placed under increased pressure as a result of the influx of refugees from Syria and the funds are expected to support immediate work on potable water networks in the area.

US ambassador to Jordan Stuart Jones said, ?The US government is standing behind the people of Jordan to help address community level water needs as a result of a system that is increasingly exacerbated in light of the recent crisis in Syria. These funds will help ensure the availability of the necessary water resources for the people of the northern governorates".

HE Basem Telfah, secretary general of Jordan?s ministry of water and irrigation, emphasised on the need for ideal utilisation of all water resources in Jordan, which suffers from a scarcity in water resources.

"This grant will help us achieve this goal,? Telfah remarked.
