Global environmental solutions company Hyflux has won a US$48mn contract to build a desalination system in Saudi Arabia

The containerised desalination system, which will be among the largest of its kind, will be placed with the existing Yanbu desalination plant on the Red Sea coast 350 km north of Jeddah. It will boost the current plant?s capacity to supply water to the industrial city of Yanbu and the nearby Madinah region, according to project officials.

The new desalination plant comprises 10 modular containerised units, which are compact and flexible, making them easy to deploy and install. The 10 units, each with a capacity of 3,000 cu/m per day, will use Hyflux?s proprietary Kristal ultrafiltration membrane technology for the pre-treatment phase of the seawater osmosis desalination process.

?We are honoured to be given this opportunity to work with the state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corporation,? said Hyflux executive chairman and group chief executive Olivia Lum. ?This project is a great example of Hyflux?s ability to provide quick, cost-effective solutions for our customers,? she added.

The project is expected to be completed in about eight months and contribute to the firm?s results for the current financial year.
