Oman Environmental Services Holding Company has announced that it will set up an integrated waste management facility in Sohar
The facility will include a three million cu/m industrial waste landfill, a 28mn cu/m slag landfill, a 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) stabilisation plant, a 1,000 tpa physical and chemical treatment plant and a 50,000 tpa incineration plant. The plant will also include dedicated systems for recycling special waste streams such as lead acid batteries, e-waste and end-of-life vehicles (ELV).
Under the Integrated Hazardous Waste Management System (IHWMS), Oman Environmental Services Holding Company will establish a thermal treatment plant, physical and chemical treatment plant, solidification plant and disposal facilities.
A 2,400,000 sqm area has been allocated at Liwa, near Sohar Port for the construction of the facility.
According to the Oman Daily Observer, the facility will be equipped to handle 1.47mn tonnes of industrial waste, mainly generated by the various industries operating in Sohar. The city generates 90 per cent of country?s hazardous waste, said Mohammed Sulaiman al Harthy, executive vice-president of corporate strategic development at Oman Environmental Services Holding Company.
The organisation is also considering floating a tender for the construction of a solidification plant. Authorities stated that the industrial waste landfill, solidification plant and waste storage facility is likely to be operational by 2016, physical and chemical treatment plant by 2018 and the thermal treatment plant by 2019.
