Jordan has revealed plans to float several tenders within the next 10 days for implementing water infrastructure projects across the country
Jordan?s water minister Hazem Nasser said that the projects will be financed by a US$5bn grant from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Nasser told The Jordan Times, ?The projects, which will be implemented across the country to improve supply, will cost around US$79.9mn. They are funded by the Gulf grant, and constitute part of many more ventures to develop the country?s water sector.?
The ministry spokesperson Omar Salameh told The Jordan Times that the projects, which will be implemented in several phases, will entail the rehabilitation of Jerash, Ajloun, Mafraq and Irbid water networks and the rehabilitation of the ministry?s wells.
In 2011, the GCC had allocated US$5bn to finance development projects in Jordan during the period 2012-2016. The grant was divided between Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, with each country paying US$1.25bn.
As part of the water supply improvement project, the Amman?s water networks, pumping stations and reservoirs will either be replaced or rehabilitated to reduce water loss, particularly as the Disi Water Conveyance Project started pumping to Amman from July.
