Three teams of youngsters in the UAE have won awards at the 2013 Green Ideas Expo for their projects in water and energy sustainability

The 2013 Green Ideas Expo was organised in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA). The contestants were judged by visitors at the 2013 editions of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) and the International Water Summit (IWS) hosted by renewable energy firm Masdar in Abu Dhabi. Both events were organised by Reed Exhibitions.

The winning team, comprising Anjania Malpani, Dahrof Pakashi and Abhidi Soryeaih won a cash prize of US$2,000 for a project that demonstrated the use of mechanical power to generate electricity by applying pressure on materials such as crystal. The project is expected to be implemented at the Dubai Airport and Abu Dhabi Airport, which witness high-passenger traffic, Malpani said.

The first runner-up was Omar Al Ameri who won a cash prize of US$1,000 for a project, which demonstrated the production of water and electricity from heat extracted through deep wells from the ground, where temperatures reach 300?C. The second runner-up was Sultan Al Kaabi, who received a cash prize of US$500.

ADWEA business support director HE Fares Obaid Al Dhaheri said, ?The participation of youngster in such competitions is a great way to enhance their skills and encourages competitiveness and innovation, while also benefiting the society.?

WFES show director Naji El Haddad said, ?The challenges facing the water and energy sector, on both the local and global level, require realistic and achievable solutions. It is very important that we involve young people today who have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way with their innovations.?

The next editions of WFES and IWS will be held from 20-22 January 2014 in Abu Dhabi.
