Dohaland has announced that they have awarded a US$50mn design and build contract for two district cooling plants in its flagship Musheireb project to Drake & Scull Water and Power L.L.C, a subsidiary of Drake & Scull International (DSI) PJSC. The scope of the contract includes the detailed design and construction of district cooling plants comprising the chiller plants and cooling towers and includes all equipment and services. The total capacity of the two proposed district cooling plants is 29,250 TR (tonnage of refrigeration).
?We are delighted to award the design and build contract to Drake and Scull for the district cooling plants for the Musheireb project,? said Mohammad Masoud Al Marri, director of projects, Dohaland. ?This is another important milestone in the construction of the Musheireb project which is progressing on schedule. The vast experience of our partners, substantiated by the quality and delivery of their previous work, was a major consideration in their selection to undertake the project.?
The contract also covers the design and construction of a chilled water reticulation network including valves and valve chamber details, the design and construction of complete mechanical electrical and plumbing (MEP) building services for the plants, the testing and commissioning of the plants as well as the operation and maintenance of the district cooling plants for a minimum period of five years.
?We are honoured to be working with Dohaland on such a prestigious project and to be associated with the regeneration of the heart of Doha,? said Khaldoun Tabari, CEO of Drake & Scull International. ?We share Dohaland's dedication, commitment and passion for the project and look forward to building a long term relationship. The Musheireb project win indicates the rapid dissemination of DSWP in the GCC market. It?s immensely satisfying to see that DSWP?s perseverance and dedication is resulting in success through the attainment of major projects such as this one.?
Drake & Scull International delivers integrated engineering through design and build disciplines of MEP, civil contracting and water, power and infrastructure engineering.
?Given Dohaland?s focus on sustainability and environment, the district cooling system shall provide an energy efficient approach to the Musheireb project,? said Al Marri. ?The qualitative advantages of the system are perceived in terms of better comfort, better reliability, and maximised convenience. It shall provide better quality of cooling, maximum cost effectiveness, capital cost elimination, space saving, decrease in sound pollution, and importantly, is environmentally friendly.?
Dohaland had recently confirmed that work on the project was proceeding on schedule and raft concrete pouring for phase 1A of the project was currently under progress. Phase 1A of Musheireb is due for completion in 2012 with the overall project expected to be ready by 2016.
